A
dam constructed on the Periyar river led to the submersion of a vast forest
area. Over the next few years a lake of 55 sq km was formed. This assured
the local wildlife a constant source of water. Ever since the wildlife
has grown in a constant progression. Today this lake presents an excellent
boating spot for tourists. Though its a Tiger Reserve, tourists come here
to view the elephants in the act of ablution and playfulness by the lake.
