BANDIPUR NATIONAL PARK AND TIGER RESERVE

A Project Tiger Reserve with a core zone of 874.20 sq.km, Bandipur lies on a hilly plateau with a n average elevation of 800 metres over the mean sea level. With its location under the shadow of the Western Ghats, Bandipur is easily one of the finest habitats of the Asian Elephant. Visitors are able to see these elephants and gaur in their natural surroundings.

The park is home to a variety of animals and plants. After the park was brought under the Project Tiger Scheme, the number of tigers have increased at a steady pace. Chital, sambar, gaur, leopard, wild boars, a large variety of birds, many rare species of insects also add to the beauty of the park.

Peafowl, partridges, quail, hornbill,giant squirrel, dhole (wild dog), elephants, sambhar, barking deer and many other rare species exist here.

Trees like rosewood, honne, alathi, bamboo and sandal are grown in abundance here.

Elephant rides in the park is a memorable experience.

Area : 874.20 sq km

Accommodation: You can avail the facility of rest houses and cottages of the Karnataka Forest Department and the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation. Cottages, are available at Kakanhalla, Mulehole, Kalkere and Gopalaswamy (Betta). These places are located in a around the park.

Distance: 80 kms from Mysore, 217 km from Bangalore. The park can be approached by road from the nearest town of Gundulpet which is about 20 kms away.

Best time to visit: June-October.

Prominent Fauna : Elephant, tiger, gaur, sambar, chital, barking deer, wild dog, wild boar, jackal, sloth bear, panther, chousingha, malabar squirrel, green pigeon, jungle fowl, the great Indian Bustard, a variety of other birds and insects, etc.
