Animal orphanage

Dr. Prakash Murudhar
Amte, son of Baba Amte, runs a hospital in Hemalkasa, Gadchiroli District
of Maharahtra which caters to 40,000 patients a year from nearby villages.
But for Amte, practising
medicine among Madia tribals is more than a vocation. The doctor has also
made a considerable difference to the eating habits of tribals by inculcating
in them a sense of compassion for animals.
The physician's compassion
for animals has taken the shape of an orphanage that houses leopards,
a lion, otters, boars, bears, cobras, kraits, hyenas, civet cats, crocodiles
and wild cats among others. "The tribals considered animals as either
food or enemy. I slowly explained to them that neither was true." He elaborates.
"If you love wild animals, they will not hurt you." He vouches.
