Forum > Butterfly Pond Project, Gurgaon > Closure of Thousand Shades Butterfly Park, Gurugram

Posted by Susan Sharma on September 03, 2020

Dear IWC member,

As many of you may be aware, September is celebrated now as the Big Butterfly Month.  A nationwide butterfly count is being organized on 5th September.  The role of butterflies as ecosystem gardeners is finally being recognized slowly but surely.

Gurgaon, the city where I live in, has had a beautiful butterfly Park in about 20 acres of space right in the center of town, which meant it attracted children and adults in large numbers.  The Park now remains closed and we understand that the NGO "Uthhan" who had a five year lease from the forest dept of Haryana to implement and run the Park has been forced to withdraw after three years.

Nobody knows the real reasons but we suspect a mixture of politics, land sharks, bribery etc seems to be at play.

We are organizing an online campaign to re-open the Park. Watch the YouTube video at the link below to get the context in which the campaign is organized.
